Send comments on the NY State 2020 Clean Energy Standard
The NYS Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) required utilities to purchase around 8% each year increasing amounts of renewable energy each year. In 2016 the name was changed to Clean Energy Standard so that nuclear energy in western NY would be subsidized with 7.6 billion of ratepayers’ utility bill fees. Now the State is seeking to extend this insanity and add a process to include hydropower from megadams built in First Nation ancestral lands.
Comments on the June 18 White Paper for the NYS 2020 Clean Energy Standard are due by August 31. Click here to submit comments. If you have questions or want more background information please contact Annie Wilson at awilsonenergy@gmail.com, or call her at 718-636-6709

5pm: NYC Dept of City Planning webinar
The Dept of City Planning is convening a webinar to address a controversial proposal to dramatically revise the process for approving new development plans. The particulars that will be discussed have to do with Staten Island, but if the proposal moves forward there it could become a model for how these decisions are made throughout NYC. The core issue with the proposal is that it would allow development projects to move forward with very limited approvals or oversight, thereby opening the door for even more over-development and all of the problems that will bring. To register for this webinar, click here: https://www1.nyc.gov/site/planning/plans/si-distriict-text-amendment/si-distriict-text-amendment-process.page#webinar

Buildings in New York City account for nearly 70% of the City’s climate pollution. Much of that is due to gross energy inefficiencies, especially in large buildings. NYC can drastically cut it’s climate and air pollution by retrofitting buildings to be more energy efficient. In the process, we can create thousands of good jobs, improve comfortability, and lower utility bills. Intro 1253 can achieve these goals.
There’s no more time for delay. Let’s seize this huge opportunity and pass Intro 1253, NOW! Come learn how you can play a role in getting this landmark legislation passed.

Koch Lies, the Planet Dies
Sunday, March 24th
1pm – 2pm
Koch Plaza, Metropolitan Museum of Art,
1000 Fifth Ave. near 82nd Facebook Event for more info
Join Rise and Resist, 350NYC and Food & Water Watch in calling for urgent action to end our climate emergency and demanding the rejection of climate denial and delay.
We are rallying at Koch Plaza to call out the chief funder of climate denial, the lie that is responsible for our climate emergency. More than two decades ago, David Koch began pouring a fortune into lies about climate change and lining the pockets of climate-denying politicians. Climate-denial paralyzed government response and two decades later we are on the cusp of disaster.
350nyc and friends will be meeting at 1:30 outside of the New York Society for Ethical Culture, 2 W 64th St. We will have some signs or bring your own. Once we have assembled, we’ll march down to Columbus Circle and join the strike at 2pm.
“We, the youth of America, are striking because decades of inaction has left us with just 11 years to change the trajectory of the worst effects of climate change, according to the Oct 2018 UN IPCC Report. We are striking because our world leaders have yet to acknowledge, prioritize, or properly address our climate crisis. We are striking because marginalized communities across our nation —especially communities of color, disabled communities, and low- income communities— are already disproportionately impacted by climate change. We are striking because if the social order is disrupted by our refusal to attend school, then the system is forced to face the climate crisis and enact change. With our futures at stake, we call for radical legislative action to combat climate change and its countless detrimental effects on the American people. We are striking for the Green New Deal, for a fair and just transition to a 100% renewable economy, and for ending the creation of additional fossil fuel infrastructure. Additionally, we believe the climate crisis should be declared a national emergency because we are running out of time.”

There is no life without the ocean. But humans are treating the ocean like a garbage area for plastics and toxins, the ocean is warming due to our continued burning of fossil fuels, and we are endangering many of the species that provide us food by over-fishing. Off-shore drilling is a big risk for all of this.
Several of the sister events include water-based activities (e.g. paddling from Atlantic City, NJ to Washington DC) There are a couple of local organizations sponsoring, or through your own initiative, to clean up trash from beaches and rivers. In the NYC area the Sea Shepard will be doing a beach clean-up in Brooklyn, and you can sign up via their website.
You can also show your support by wearing blue and boycotting plastics on Saturday, June 9.

Groundbreaking Climate Legislation Proposed for NY State
With Federal action blocked, NY State can lead by example. The Climate and Community Protection Act (CCPA) would legally require NY State government to reach 100% renewable energy by 2050, with strong labor standards and investment in communities impacted by climate change and inequality in mind. Learn how you can help get it passed into law. http://www.nyrenews.org/
Increasing temperatures: From 1900 to 2013, mean annual temperatures in NYC rose 3.4 degrees F.A further 4-5 degrees F increase is expected by 2050.By 2080, we’ll have 6 heat waves per year. Sea level rise: NYC sea levels have risen a foot since 1900.By 2050, one to two feet more is expected.Sea levels could rise as much as six feet by 2100.
Dangerous storms: Precipitation will increase and become more erratic leading to more frequent and more intense storms, as well as more droughts and floods.
Many indirect impacts – on agriculture, public health, the economy – in the US and around the world – will affect us.Some scientists claim that scenarios from the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change are too conservative. An article in New York Magazine illustrates other scenarios.
What can we do?
We must try to slow down and reverse climate change – while making ourselves and our communities more resilient to its impacts. The Paris Agreement, aimed at limiting global warming to under 2 degrees C (3.6 F), was a step in the right direction, even though its measures wouldn’t have been sufficient. With the US federal government captured by fossil fuel corporate interests, and in full denial of reality, US cities and states are acting independently.NYC and the US Conference of Mayors have agreed to commit to the Paris goals. There is no time for complacency. Individual green lifestyle choices are necessary, but not enough.NYC plans are quite good, but also not sufficient. We can help NYC implement and strengthen its plans by plugging our neighbors into current programs to conserve energy and add renewable power in buildings. Expanding local efforts prepares for the next steps: organizing to massively upgrade City, State and National responses.
NYC’s Plans for Sustainability and Climate Change Response
PlaNYC, the City’s first sustainability plan, was released in 2007 by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. In 2014, Mayor Bill di Blasio updated the plan as OneNYC, detailing hundreds of initiatives underway at City agencies, and adopting the goals of the Paris Agreement.NYC’s Roadmap to 80 x 50 report of 2016 analyzed potential emission reductions. The City is on track to meet its 2030target, but still must work harder to get to 80%.
Switch your personal electric use to wind and solar energy
350NYC makes this very easy. Electricity can be generated by a fossil fuel burning power plant, a nuclear power plant, hydropower, or a utility scale wind or solar facility.Only 2% of the electricity used by most NYC residents comes from renewable power: the other 98% is from other sources – fossil fuels and nuclear power.
If you rent or own an apartment, and pay your own utility bill, you can switch to a wind or solar energy provider. They will contact Con Ed, modify your account, and purchase the power you use each month from renewable sources. You will have personally divested from fossil fuels. Choosing among many suppliers of green electricity is confusing.350NYC reviewed over 30 suppliers and decided to recommend and partner with Clean ChoiceEnergy. If you sign up with them, 350NYC will receive a $150 sign-on bonus. Visit our website to get started.
Energy Efficiency for your Building
About 70% of NYC’s greenhouse gas emissions come from the energy used to heat, power, and cool buildings.Since over 90% of the buildings that exist today in NYC will still be here in 2050, nearly all existing buildings must be retrofitted to become more energy efficient.
Transform your building. Explain to management what’s in it for them. One of the most impactful things you can do is to encourage your building’s management to act.Tell your building’s coop or condo board, or the property manager, that NYC’s free program, the Retrofit Accelerator, will help them assess what energy conservation measures (ECMs) make sense for them.
ECMs will help owners and managers save money by reducing utility bills and operating costs, reducing labor and maintenance, and increasing occupant comfort. Even if they are not concerned about lessening climate impacts, they’ll recognize that green practices are increasingly standard and have marketing benefits. Many ECMs will save enough from energy bills to pay for themselves in less than five years: LED lighting and sensors, sub-metering, ventilation, fuel switching, domestic hot water, HVAC controls, and distribution systems.
Most of these upgrades are voluntary, and many building managers do only what is required to comply with City laws.Managers will be more willing to consider them if they know that help is available – and that residents are asking.
NYC Retrofit Accelerator: Staff at the City’s free advisory service streamlines the process of making energy efficiency improvements in buildings. They will work with management to assess the building’s unique needs, make connections with qualified contractors, find cash incentives and financing, train building staff, and provide support even after project completion. Connect with them at 212-656-9202 and.Contact 350NYC for a volunteer to assist you.
Handbook for Multifamily Buildings: Of NYC’s one million buildings, nearly 100,000 are multifamily properties.A handbook specifically for them introduces the basics of energy efficiency, incentive programs, financing, relevant local laws, and technical training programs.
Ready to Respond: Strategies for Multifamily Building Resilience: 50 building resilience experts and staff from FEMA compiled a manual detailing 19 practical strategies for building owners to make their properties more resilient against the effects of extreme weather events.
Solar Panels for your Roof?
First, fix the areas where your building is wasting energy.Only install solar power after that. Otherwise, much of the additional electricity added by the solar project will be wasted!
Solar electric systems convert sunlight into electricity. They can reduce the amount of electricity a building has to buy from a utility. Excess electricity produced above building use can be credited to your building’s utility bill through net metering. Financial and tax incentives can cover as much as 80% of the costs of solar panels. They can also be financed or leased, for little or no money upfront.
If you own a house, you can buy or lease solar yourself. If you live in a coop or condo apartment building, the building’s board and management must agree to consider and then install a solar project. For large, tall buildings, the solar yield from relatively limited rooftop surface area will not cover as much of the building’s common area electricity needs as in six story buildings with more roof space compared to building volume.
Community Solar: Solarize NYC brings together groups of potential solar customers, using group purchasing power to reduce prices 10-20% from individual pricing. A community can include a neighborhood, a group of buildings, or an association such as a labor union or property management firm. Solarize NYC will assist in choosing a solar installation company that offers competitive, transparent pricing.
The Community Shared Solarmodel allows building owners and renters in multifamily buildings without adequate solar access the opportunity to subscribe to portions of a large solar array located on- or off-site and managed by a third party. Each individual subscriber’s share of production will appear as a credit on their utility bill, offsetting their monthly electricity charges. If the solar array generates more electricity than subscribers use, the excess generation credits will be distributed to individual subscribers.
To cope with climate change, we must transition to 100% renewable energy ASAP
The Solutions Project and scientists at Stanford University have come up with plans for all 50 US states and 138 countries to transition to 100% renewable energy. The Climate Mobilization is an organization that calls for a government-coordinated emergency effort to move from fossil fuels to renewable energy ASAP, modeled after the US mobilization at the outset of World War II. 350.org founder Bill McKibben calls for politicians to commit to converting to 100% renewable energy while working to keep remaining fossil fuels in the ground.
Changing New York State’s Climate and Energy Policy
The Solutions Project’s NY State plan outlines how by 2030 electricity, transportation, heating/cooling, and industry energy infrastructure could be run entirely from wind, water, and sunlight, provided by: 10% onshore wind (4,020 5-megawatt / MW turbines), 40% offshore wind (12,700 5-MW turbines), 10% concentrated solar (387 100-MW plants), 10% solar-PV plants (828 50-MW plants), 6% residential rooftop PV (5 million 5-kW systems), 12% commercial rooftop PV (500,000 100-kW systems), with smaller numbers of geothermal, wave and hydroelectric systems.
New York State can switch to 100% clean renewable energy by 2030.
New York needs to commit to this goal, and can make it by investing in energy conservation, energy reduction, wind, solar and geothermal (e.g., heat pumps) not oil, gas, coal, fossil fuel infrastructure, or nuclear power. We must immediately halt investments in fossil fuels and related infrastructure. Legislation to require this has been introduced in the NY State Assembly and Senate. NYSERDA is working on a study on how fast NYS can move to 100% clean energy.GELF’s A Local Climate Action Agenda explains what local governments can do.
NY State needs to strengthen its plans to develop offshore wind power by making a firm commitment to purchase 5,000 MW of wind power by 2025, and 10,000 MW by 2030. Unfortunately, Governor Cuomo is still giving more money ($7.6 billion over 12 years) to bail out old upstate nuclear power plants than to renewable energy.
NY State Climate and Community Protection Act
While the NY State Energy Plan sets positive goals for 2030, they are only aspirational. NYS government agencies and officials are not legally required to put them into practice. The Climate and Community Protection Act (CCPA) is needed to fix this. The CCPA was drafted by climate law experts at the Sabin Center for Environmental Law at Columbia University, and is backed by NY Renews, a coalition of 140+ labor, community and environmental groups.
The CCPA would legally require NY State government to enforce its climate commitments, set new labor standards, provide worker protections for those in the renewable energy industries, and fund community resilience and green jobs training projects.
The New York State Assembly voted to write the CCPA into law in both in 2016 and 2017, but the bill keeps getting blocked in the Senate. The 8 members of the Independent Democratic Conference – Senators elected as Democrats who now vote with the Republicans – signed on as co-sponsors of the bill near the end of the 2017 session. Then, instead of pushing the Senate’s Republican leadership to bring the bill up for an immediate vote, the IDC suddenly claimed profound misgivings about the bill. The IDC’s last-minute endorsement of the CCPA enabled its members to claim they support climate action, while actually helping Senate Republicans to block it.
Urge Your NY State Senator and Senatorial Candidateto support the CCPA
Ask them both to cosponsor the Climate and Community Protection Act (S7971A).
Senator Peralta is a member of the IDC.This year he has signed up as a cosponsor of S7971A.Thank him for his support – ask him to advocate strongly for passage of the bill in the Senate this year, and ask his IDC colleagues to do the same. Contact him at 718-205-3881 and jperalta@nysenate.gov.
Jessica Ramos is running to challenge Sen. Peralta in the Democratic primary this September 13.Ask her to co-sponsor and advocate for S7971A if elected. Contact her through her website, www.ramosforstatesenate.com/.
350NYC neither endorses nor opposes candidates. As part of our educational mission we encourage you to contact both candidates about climate protection and this bill.

Cuomo Walk The Talk: Protect Our Homes, Not Your Donors
Cuomo Walk The Talk: Protect Our Homes, Not Your Donors
This Thursday, Governor Cuomo is holding a fundraiser in Manhattan – and we’ll be outside, urging him to get New York off fossil fuels. We’ll be calling on him to walk the talk on climate change by stopping fossil fuel infrastructure and leading a transition to 100 percent renewable energy.
We will be joined by housing affordability activists who will be calling on Cuomo to support housing policies that prioritize and deliver real affordability for the most economically vulnerable households.
New York faces an onslaught of pipelines, power plants, and other projects that transport and burn fracked oil and gas, including the Williams pipeline, the Pilgrim pipelines, the CPV power plant, the Albany micro-grid and much more. Governor Cuomo must be a true climate leader by halting these dangerous projects, making polluters pay for the damage they’re doing to our health and our climate, and moving New York to 100 percent renewable energy.
Facebook Event for more information. Or to RSVP, please contact Laura Shindell at Food & Water Watch: lshindell@fwwatch.org
Forum on Climate Change, 100% Renewable Energy by 2030

8711 18th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11214 (Take the D to the 18th Ave Station)
Join us for a forum on what New York can and must do to move off fossil fuels and on to 100% renewable energy. Assemblyman Bill Colton, the Green Education Legal Fund, Food & Water Watch, 350NYC and others are sponsoring this important forum. Colton is the lead sponsor of the bill to have NYS move to 100% clean energy by 2030 (A5105 / S5908)
NOTE- – 350NYC Sustainable Solutions & Climate Education Working group is cancelled this month so we can attend this.
Trump wants to cut our U.S. Environmental Protection Agency budget by more than 30 percent—but our Senators can stop this agenda dead as they prepare to vote on a spending bill the first week in December. We need to raise our voices and demand Senator Chuck Schumer do whatever is necessary to stop Republicans from making ANY cuts to the EPA’s budget! Join us Dec. 1 for a petition delivery rally at Senator Schumer’s office in Manhattan to show him New Yorkers are counting on him to stand up for the EPA!
Did you know that the EPA was born out of mass social movements in the 60s, alongside many fights for justice, like civil rights? It is a product of hard fought grassroots efforts to safeguard our land, water, air and communities. Now in 2017, we need to ensure environmental protections aren’t eroded through a Senate budget vote this December.
Join us to stand up for our environmental protections!

Can you help us light up the NY skyline with messages of resistance and climate action? We are organizing a Light Brigade to send a message to the NYC Comptroller Stringer to divest from destructive fossil fuel companies. More than $3 billion of public money is invested in the likes of Exxon, Chevron, BP and Enbridge.
As we approach the 5th anniversary of Superstorm Sandy and watch with horror the destruction caused by Hurricanes Irma and Harvey, now, more than ever, we need New York City to be a climate leader. But NYC can’t do that if it continues to invest in climate destroyers. We need 30 people to come out and hold brightly lit signs produced by the NYC Light Brigade. It’ll be a fun, creative way of sending a serious message to NYC pension fund trustees which are meeting the next day on Sept 20. And you’ll be helping to create dramatic and lasting images that’ll be used often in the lead up to a big march at the end of October. It’s time to #DivestNY!
PLEASE RSVP by emailing us at 350nyc@gmail.com and include your phone number. Feel free to recruit friends!

In September, Congress is scheduled to vote on the budget — and the Environmental Protection Agency is on the chopping block.
Join us on September 14 in calling on Senator Schumer to oppose any and all cuts to the EPA budget.
Donald Trump and the Congressional Majority are proposing massive cuts to the EPA budget, which would undermine its ability to protect our water, air and climate.

Shut Down Goldman Sachs’ Pipeline Conference!
Thursday, August 10 @ 8:30- 11:00 AM
Goldman Sachs Investment Bank
200 West Street, Manhattan
350NYC is co-sponsoring this event to tell Goldman, Trump and Cuomo: No More Oil & Gas Pipelines. Please join us to send a strong message- #DefundPipelines.
Wall Street’s giant bank, Goldman Sachs, holds an annual finance conference for the worst of the worst: the corporations financing projects such as Dakota Access, Pilgrim, and KeystoneXL that seek to rip through indigenous communities; destroy our water and air quality; and fuel the climate crisis.
These corporations network with big investors and work to secure financing for their projects at this elite, private confab. This year, let’s give them a loud and clear wake-up call. We’ll be at 200 West Street, Goldman Sach’s lower Manhattan headquarters at 8:30am to 11am. Nearest subway is World Trade Center.
>> Tell Goldman Sachs to stop financing oil, gas, coal, and pipelines
>> Protest Goldman Sachs’ control over our federal government through their many top level people like Steve Bannon, Steve Mnuchin and Gary Cohn in the Trump Administration
>> Urge New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to reject any new fracking infrastructure projects such as the Pilgrim Pipelines
Campaign Meeting Featuring Judith Enck, former top EPA official
Thursday, July 27 @ 7:00 – 9:00 pm
New York Society for Ethical Culture
2 West 64th Street, Manhattan
Donald Trump has launched an assault on the Environmental Protection Agency, threatening our health, communities, and environment.
Trump and Congressional Republicans are proposing to slash the EPA budget. On the chopping block are programs to clean up hazardous waste, prevent climate change, and promote Environmental Justice. The agency’s ability to enforce the Clean Water, the Clean Air Act, and the Safe Drinking Water Act would be severely undermined.
Join us at this Food & Water Watch meeting on July 27 to hear from Judith Enck, the EPA’s former top official for New York. We’ll explore how EPA cuts would impact New York communities. And we’ll discuss how to get involved in the Campaign to Save the EPA.
Hey New York! Offshore Wind is HERE and it’s NEAR to beginning stages of development! We know that we need to demand this project is developed with CLIMATE, JOBS and JUSTICE at every stage… so our plan is to make a SHORT promo film for social media to go VIRAL!
YOUR ROLE: Come for the day OR come just for the shoot time with our amazing film crew! And when the crew cues us, we shout “CLIMATE, JOBS, JUSTICE!” That’s it!
Saturday, July 22 from 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM
Catch the 2:30pm Ferry from Wall Street Pier 11 at Gouverneur Lane at South Street and the F.D.R. Drive in Manhattan, NY for an hour long boat ride to Beach 108 in the Rockaways.
The Sane Energy Project team and others from the NY #WinWind coalition will meet you there.
Plan to join us for this important movie, discussion and social event.
This documentary deals with the history of coal mining in the U.S. and the labor and environmental issues that surround this industry. Don Blankenship the owner of Massey Energy who was jailed for conspiracy to violate federal mine safety and health standards, just got out and is now appealing to the White House to reduce penalties for these very violations. His behavior was responsible for the deaths of 29 miners in Big Branch mine in 2009.
Andrew Tilson, who is founder of the Workers Unite Film Festival, represent the film for the screening. He will speak about the ways Labor and Environmental organizations can build better relationships to rein in bad corporate actors and work together to ensure a just transition for workers in a post-carbon economy.
NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer is headlining a climate change event at Columbia University next Wednesday July 12 at 6pm. The event is aptly titled Sea Level Rise: Causes, Impacts and Options for Solutions. We want to take this opportunity to challenge Stringer to be the climate action champion we need him to be by supporting fossil fuel divestment at the NYC pension funds. The pension funds invest more than $4 billion in dirty oil, gas and pipeline companies that are wrecking our climate and threatening New York with another Superstorm Sandy.
Will you come out to leaflet the event, bring in a divestment hand sign and ask a divestment question from the floor? We need to make divestment front and center for the Comptroller and this is a great opportunity to do so.
It’s great to talk about rising sea levels and climate change, but New Yorkers need real action – and that starts with divesting the NYC pension funds from the companies driving climate chaos.
If you want to go into the event, please reserve a seat through the CU website. It’s FREE:
On Thursday, June 29, New Yorkers are standing together to urge Energy Independence for New York State by freeing it from Big Oil and Gas! Events at locations across the State. Burning fossil fuels is a leading contributor to climate change and the oil and gas industry has known this for decades. Yet, instead of acting, they began a campaign to manufacture doubt and undermine action. New York cannot break its addiction to fossil fuels by permitting new infrastructure that will lock us into decades of fossil fuel use and leave our land and water vulnerable to spills and accidents.
We call on Governor Cuomo to declare energy independence and urge him to use the State’s powers to say NO to fossil fuel infrastructure! Governor Cuomo and the Department of Environmental Conservation must deny permits, Water Quality Certifications, or other regulatory approvals for transmission pipelines, power generating plants, compressor stations, and all fossil fuel infrastructure projects.
New York can lead on energy by 1) accelerating investment in renewable energy like off-shore wind and community solar and in energy efficiency measures; and 2) holding corporate polluters responsible for their actions in the courts.
If you haven’t yet seen the new Josh Fox documentary called “AWAKE: A Dream From Standing Rock”, June 5 will be an opportunity to see it and to hear from one or two people who were there when the film was being made.
Josh Fox has also produced “Gasland” and “Gasland 2” and “How to Let Go of the World and Love All of the Things Climate Can’t Change”. AWAKE was screened on Earth Day at the Tribeca Film Festival. We are in the process of confirming guest speakers.
Please RSVP via this MeetUp to help us know how many people to expect so we can best arrange the space.
Trump is announcing his decision on pulling the U.S. out of the global Paris climate agreement at 3pm today. Make no mistake: this will almost certainly be a devastating blow to our collective future. We’re not going to take this lying down. Now, more than ever, we need New York’s elected leaders to stand up and take bold action.
That’s why we will rally against Trump’s announcement today (Thursday, June 1st) at 6pm – and call on our local leaders to take action.
Join us at 6:00pm today to say: NYC Stands Up Against Trump’s Paris Exit.
We will first rally at Foley Square/Federal Plaza in Lower Manhattan, and then march to City Hall. We will protest Trump’s outrageous action and call on Governor Cuomo, Mayor de Blasio and Comptroller Stringer to take the bold action we need to fight the climate emergency. This is a crisis and they should act like it.
In this dark moment, let’s take our outrage and channel it into positive change here in New York, where we know we can move Governor Cuomo, Mayor de Blasio, Comptroller Stringer and our other elected officials to action.
Join us at 6:00pm today to say: NYC Stands Up Against the Trump Paris Exit. Rally at Foley Square/Federal Plaza in Lower Manhattan, and then march to City Hall.
Please feel free to bring a sign and get ready to raise your voice! Together, we can fight back to save our collective future by making NYC take the bold action we need.
Join the Facebook event and help us spread the word. Thanks!
State of the Resistance: An Update From The Frontlines
NYS AG Eric Schneiderman & State Senator Liz Krueger Introduction by Council Member Dan Garodnick
Join us for an evening of inspiring theatre and discussion with two Honduran activists honoring the life of Berta Cáceres. Afro-indigenous autonomous feminist, poet and writer Melissa Cardoza and Karla Lara, a feminist who voices resistance through song and writing, will perform stories from Melissa’s newly released book *13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance*. Both were amongst the closest friends to Berta Cáceres, the Honduran indigenous leader and organizer of COPINH who was assassinated for her work in defense of the Lenca people and against patriarchy, capitalism, and racism. This book and this tour are dedicated to Berta. A post-performance dialogue will examine parallels between current struggles in Honduras and the U.S.
Melissa Cardoza, an afro-indigenous fearless journalist, poet, writer and feminist organizer from Honduras, poetically relates some of the most compelling moments she has witnessed amidst the brutal repression and unyielding hope and struggle that have characterized post-coup Honduras today. She will be touring along with her fellow member of the Honduran Red de Defensoras or network of women rights defenders, beloved Honduran jazz/folk protest singer Karla Lara, who appears in one of the book’s stories and has been an icon and sharp voice in the resistance.

Buy the book “13 Colors of Honduran Resistance: (in Spanish and English) “13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance by Melissa Cardoza is a must read for anyone who wants to learn about the many contours of Honduran feminists fighting for self-determination and dignity. These stories of bravery, of struggle and pain, and ultimately of a resilience rooted in a love for freedom will grip your heart. Cardoza is brilliant in storytelling, and ensures that, in memory of our sister Berta Cáceres, feminisms are three dimensional and span multiple experiences—trans, Black, elderly, and more. The lessons contained in these stories offer important reflections for all revolutionaries.” – Alicia Garza, co-creator of the Black Lives Matter Network
The business model of the fossil fuel industry is in no way compatible with a safe climate. Join us and many other divestment organizers this week to advocate for the #DivestNY movement and demand that our institutions show their leadership and acknowledge the damage fossil fuels cause.
It’s time to divest from the industry that’s wreaking havoc on our communities.
There’s a big battle brewing in New York, home to half a dozen of the largest pension funds in the country. We love NY, but we don’t love that one of our most progressive states is still investing billions in the likes of Exxon, and the companies funding the Dakota Access and Keystone pipelines.
Linked here is a day-by-day toolkit on actions you can take to ensure NY breaks ties with an industry that is holding us back from a clean and socially just future. Outlined below are a few of those actions:
Let’s translate the energy of the People’s Climate March and the Trump resistance into political impact in NYC: join a mass people’s interview of NYC Mayor de Blasio, Public Advocate James and Comptroller Stringer.Come learn about the issues, and then hear our city’s leaders’ views, question them on the big issues, including divestment from fossil fuels – and then hold them accountable as we urge them to take the bold policy action we need! With Trump taking us backwards in the fight against climate change and inequality, it’s now even more vital that NYC step up. New York produces massive climate pollution and is also riven by inequality. We can fight both of these moral crisis at the same time by urging our top elected leaders to take action, in person. Please join hundreds of your fellow New Yorkers at this important forum to stop climate change, create good jobs, and ensure justice for all. This event is co-organized by the People’s Climate March – NY, 350.org, 350NYC, ALIGN-NY, #DivestNY, Faith in New York, Food & Water Watch, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), New York City Environmental Justice Alliance, New York Communities for Change (NYCC), New York Lawyers for the Public Interest, Sane Energy Project, Transform Don’t Trash NYC, WeACT for Environmental Justice and the Working Families Party (event co-sponsor list in formation).
#DivestNY LobbyDay
Monday, May 8th Westminster Presbyterian Church 85 Chestnut Street, Albany NY 10am-3pm
Join us in Albany to support The Fossil Fuel Divestment Act, A3712 Ortiz / S4596 Krueger which will require New York to divest the $170 billion state pension fund from fossil fuels. Currently, the pension fund invests more than $10 billion in fossil fuel companies, and more than $400 million in the Dakota Access Pipeline. Burning fossil fuels causes climate destruction like Superstorm Sandy that devastated New York and caused over $65 billion in damages.
10:00 – 11:00 Registration and Divestment Briefing – 85 Chestnut Street
11:30 – 12:30 Legislative Meetings – Legislative Office Building

PEOPLE’S MARCH FOR JOBS, JUSTICE, & CLIMATE
Recently Donald Trump gutted the Clean Power Plan and rolled back crucial environmental protections. These protections were hard-won, and were set up to both combat climate change and protect the most at-risk among us: low-income communities, communities of color and our nation’s children.Trump’s executive order is nothing less than a tragedy. Today, we’re doubling down on our efforts to make sure Trump and his cronies like Scott Pruitt know: our resistance is here to stay. Trump’s 100th day in office will be marked by a powerful show of our people-powered resistance in our march for climate, jobs and justice. On April 29 we will come together in DC to physically surround the White House and drown out the administration’s climate denial. We will raise our collective voices and call for real action and an end to the climate crisis. Click here to invite your friends on Facebook to join you.
Here are the latest details from the PCM organizers for the day:
11:00am: We will gather in front of the Capitol Building in contingents that spell out the values we share: justice, truth, democracy, faith and more. No matter what community you’re marching with, or where you’re coming from, there will be a spot for you. At 12:30pm, we’ll begin marching up Pennsylvania avenue.
1:30pm: We will surround the White House on all sides, and take powerful collective action to honor the lives at stake and make a loud sound demanding climate justice and good jobs that will drown out all of the climate-denying nonsense that has been coming out of the White House and Congress.
2:00pm: there will be a moment of silence as a coordinated joint action throughout the march. Information about the joint action will go out over text.
To get that message, please Text CLIMATE to 21333 in advance.
3:00pm: We will reconvene at the Washington Monument grounds to connect and share the stories that brought us to DC. We’ll hear from the front line of the climate crisis and share solutions rooted in our own communities. There’ll be music and beautiful art from around the country that powerfully shows our local demands and visions. We’ll even assemble all our individual signs into one collective message of resistance.
Trump’s game plan has been to relentlessly attack our communities and shock us into hopelessness. It hasn’t worked because our people-powered movement is stronger than he is — together, the resistance stopped his attempts to overturn the Affordable Care Act and stymied his despicable Muslim ban. Now, we are going to do the same thing to his attacks on our climate, our air, and our water. But for this march to be a real show of our collective power — to send the message that our resistance is here to stay and will fight tooth and nail for our communities — we need to be there en masse, raising our voices with our friends, family, neighbors, and loved ones.Click here to invite your friends and family on Facebook to march with us on April 29th.
Thursday, April 20

350NYC will join Friends of the Earth U.S. on Thursday, April 20 to deliver petitions to TIAA’s headquarters in New York City as part of a national week of action targeting TIAA.
Meeting location: St. Agnes Catholic Church, 143 E 43rd Street (between Lex. & 3rd ave.)
The main action will be at TIAA’s office at 730 3rd Ave.
Help us deliver our petition to TIAA asking them to stop funding deforestation and grabbing land. Over 85,000 people from the general public and 5,000 TIAA clients signed our petition. Now it is time for us to take our campaign to the next stage and deliver our demands to TIAA!
TIAA, one of the largest pension fund management companies in the U.S. that manages the retirement money of professors, unions, nonprofits, museums and other cultural institutions, prides itself on upholding socially responsible values. Unfortunately, across the world from the U.S. to Brazil, Guatemala, Indonesia, and Uganda, TIAA is linked to land deals that are anything but transparent. It is involved in agricultural enterprises that force farmers off land, cause deforestation and exacerbate climate change and contribute to human rights violations. Currently,TIAA has over $100 million invested in the world’s most harmful palm oil companies and $8 billion invested in farmland that was acquired without permission from local communities. We’re demanding TIAA come clean about its investments in land and implement a deforestation and land grab-free investment policy.
Groups in our coalition include: Rede Social de Justiça e Direitos Humanos, Grain, National Family Farm Coalition, Family Farm Defenders, Wisconsin Farmer’s Union, Organic Consumers Association, Fair World Project, Rural Coalition, Presbyterian Hunger Program-PC(USA), Friends of the Earth U.S., ActionAid USA, MaryKnoll, Grassroots International, Faculty/Staff Divestment Network, 350NYC, Union of Concerned Scientists, Fian International, Fian Sweden, Other Worlds, Sum of Us, Food and Water Watch, Responsible Endowment Coalition

“America is facing a food crisis driven by profitability and a lack of consumer education. While the window to transforming our heartland continues to shrink, passionate individuals have emerged who provide hope that the health of our nation might still remain within our grasp.” (Mark Wechsler)
Join us for this new full-length movie that explores these issues and stay for the discussion about how New Yorkers can make a difference.
“Sustainable” the movie provides a vital investigation of the economic and environmental instability of America’s food system, from the agricultural issues we face — soil loss, water depletion, climate change, pesticide use — to the community of leaders who are determined to fix it. Sustainable is a film about the land, the people who work it and what must be done to sustain it for future generations.
The narrative of the film focuses on Marty Travis, a seventh-generation farmer in central Illinois who watched his land and community fall victim to the pressures of big agribusiness. Determined to create a proud legacy for his son, Marty transforms his profitless wasteland and pioneers the sustainable food movement in Chicago.
Sustainable travels the country seeking leadership and wisdom from some of the most forward thinking farmers like Bill Niman, Klaas Martens and John Kempf – heroes who challenge the ethical decisions behind industrial agriculture. It is a story of hope and transformation, about passion for the land and a promise that it can be restored to once again sustain us.
Donald Trump’s assault on our environment threatens the health of New Yorkers. Trump proposes slashing the Environmental Protection Agency budget by 31%, eliminating thousands of jobs, undermining enforcement of laws that safeguard our water and air, and closing programs that protect our most vulnerable.
New York communities would be hard-hit by these cuts. The cleanups of the Gowanus Canal and Newtown Creek in Brooklyn could be disrupted. Programs to combat global warming would be eliminated, risking further climate catastrophes like Superstorm Sandy.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer must lead the charge to stop Trump’s dangerous cuts. As the nation’s most powerful Democrat, he must draw a line in the sand and refuse to support a budget that cuts EPA’s funding.

Join 350NYC, Fossil Free NYC, NYU Divest and Divest NY coalition activists for a rally and press conference to call on the Comptroller to Divest NYC pension funds from fossil fuels!
We commend NYCERS and TRS (the two largest NYC pension funds) for recently completing divestment from thermal coal and are glad to see that studies are finally underway to analyze both the carbon footprint and the carbon risk and of all five NYC pension funds. We very much hope that it will lead to immediate divestment from the top two hundred fossil fuel companies doing the most harm to our planet. But there’s no guarantee, so we need to keep the public pressure on! Climate change waits for no one!
We’ll be delivering our petition during the rally so we’re doing one last big push to get as many signatures as possible before the 14th.Please sign and share. Tell Comptroller Scott Stringer to be a leader and stop funding climate change.
