Dear Senator Schumer,

I write to urge you to rally a forceful Democratic opposition to all of President-Elect Trump’s cabinet appointees, and to four in particular: Rex Tillerson for Secretary of State, Scott Pruit for EPA Administrator, Rick Perry for Secretary of Energy, and Ryan Zinke for Secretary of the Interior. While all of Trump’s appointees are horrible – abysmally under qualified, pushing radical reactionary agendas, hostile to the very mission of the agency they have been picked to head, and sometimes all three – the four men I focus on here are among the worst of the worst and, together with Trump, pose a grave threat to the environment in our country and, indeed, the world.

Why oppose these four appointees in particular? Here are some of the most significant reasons:

Tillerson (State): Tillerson, who has no government experience, is of course the longtime CEO of Exxon Mobil, the wealthiest corporation in the world and perhaps the single most significant driver of humanity’s headlong rush towards climate chaos. Tillerson’s appointment will undoubtedly mean that the aggressive promotion of fossil-fuel infrastructure and consumption will become the official foreign policy of the United States, at a time when we should instead take a leadership role in the development and spread of green, renewable energy technology. Aside from this, Tillerson’s far-flung conflicts of interest, including his company’s extensive ties to Russia and to Vladimir Putin, alone are enough to disqualify him for State.

Pruitt (EPA): Pruitt is a climate-change denier who, as Oklahoma’s Attorney General, is currently suing the EPA over President Obama’s Clean Energy Plan – one of the most significant government-led green initiatives in years. Pruitt is nestled deep in the pocket of the fossil fuel industry, and would like nothing better than to dismantle the agency’s many achievements and strip it of its regulatory power, all in the name of states’ (read corporate) rights.

Perry (Energy): This bumbling ex-governor (and failed Dancing With the Stars contestant) famously wants to dismantle the very cabinet department he has been tapped to head, apparently unaware or uncaring that it is responsible not only for energy policy but also for wide-ranging scientific research and the management of our nuclear arsenal. Perry is another climate-change denier, and sits on boards of Energy Transfer Partners and Sunoco, two companies involved in the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline. Perry would be an utter disaster at Energy.

Zinke (Interior): Zinke is a one-term Representative from Montana, with over a million constituents, one of the top coal-producing states. Most of that coal is mined from land owned by the federal government and managed by Interior. Under President Obama, the Department imposed a moratorium on new mining leases. Zinke has been a vocal opponent of that ban, and also wants to expedite oil and gas drilling on federal land. When he ran for Congress in 2014, Zinke said that climate change is “not proven science.”

I join with hundreds of thousands of others calling for unyielding opposition to all of Trump’s cabinet picks, but I especially demand that you vociferously oppose these four nominees who, together with Trump himself, represent a true existential threat to the climate and the environment. As Minority Leader, you must do everything you can to ensure a full and transparent vetting of each nominee’s tax returns, potential conflicts of interest, qualifications, and position regarding climate change and the environment generally.

This is not a time for compromise or dealmaking. This is a life or death moment for the environment – perhaps for American democracy itself. This is a time to fight, and Democrats here in New York and across the country demand that you do just that.

Sincerely,

Dear Senator Gillibrand,

I write today to ask that you publicly oppose all of President-Elect Trump’s cabinet appointees. In particular, I ask that, as a member of the Environment and Public Works committee and as someone who has shown her commitment to protecting the environment and fighting climate change, you do all that you can to oppose four appointees in particular: Rex Tillerson for Secretary of State, Scott Pruit for EPA Administrator, Rick Perry for Secretary of Energy, and Ryan Zinke for Secretary of the Interior.
