350NYC announces plans for an action on Wednesday, December 10th, International Human Rights Day, to demand that world governments address the serious threat that global warming poses to the human rights of all the world’s people, and especially to those of vulnerable communities throughout the world.

Our event will take place to coincide with a UN meeting in Lima, Peru that is part of the 2014-15 negotiations for a global climate treaty. It will both underline the urgency of the climate crisis and highlight the human rights dimension of the struggle for climate justice.

International Human Rights Day celebrates the 1948 UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, an inspirational and visionary document that does not explicitly mention climate change. However, environmental justice organizations have spelled out the inextricable connection between the global struggle for human rights and the climate crisis and are calling for a response from the international community, as articulated by the Environmental Justice Foundation.

Today, climate change is the greatest threat to basic human rights: food security, access to water, employment, housing, public health and the right to live in dignity. The action on December 10 in NYC stands in solidarity with frontline communities and nations throughout the world and calls on the U.S. government to take decisive action to address the climate crisis.

PLANNING MEETING: We are seeking participation and co-sponsorships from the broad spectrum of groups that helped organize the People’s Climate March and that were so effective in reaching New Yorkers from every community. Groups that are interested in co-sponsoring this event are invited to send a representative to the next planning meeting to help shape the final event. (Email 350nyc(at)gmail(dot)com if you can’t attend but want to co-sponsor).
