Divestment has the power to rein in the fossil fuel industry and support our transition to a clean energy economy. Evidence is mounting that fossil fuel stocks are overvalued and divestment protects our public funds from serious financial risks. Divestment is the smart thing to do and the right thing to do – it’s time to invest our public money in a sustainable future.

DiNapoli has made powerful statements warning about the risks of investing in fossil fuels and said, “Institutional investors must think over the long-term, which means that we must take environmental risks into consideration when we make investments.”   Let’s help him make the right decision for New York. At $160 billion, the New York State Common Retirement Fund would be the largest institutional investor to commit to fossil fuel divestment — which would be a huge victory for the climate justice movement.

Here in New York, we have witnessed the impacts of climate disruption, with Hurricanes Sandy and Irene devastating the homes and livelihoods of millions of New Yorkers. Join other New Yorkers for an action outside of Comptroller DiNapoli’s office — to call on him to make New York State a leader on our energy future.
